VERDICT / The Breville Scraper Mixer Pro proves it can beat the competition at almost any task. It includes helpful features like a timer, pause function and load sensors, so it gives the right amount of power for each job.
Breville’s latest stand mixer combines form, function and innovation. The Breville Scraper Mixer Pro offers more strength, performance and convenience than most of the electric mixers we tested. Its standout feature is the included scraper paddle, which is meant to get every last bit of frosting, icing and batter from the bottom and sides of the bowl. For these reasons, we consider this Breville machine one of the best stand mixers on the market, and it earns the Top Ten Reviews Bronze Award.
The Breville mixer pushed through the 10-minute kneading process in our bread dough test and came out in the upper percentile of all the mixers we tested. The resulting ball of dough was shiny and elastic – exactly what you want in a perfectly prepared dough. You can even use this exclusively as a dough mixer.
We also put the machine through its paces with a cookie dough test. This mixer, fitted with the basic paddle, managed to cream the butter and sugar well, leaving only a bit of butter on the side of the bowl. It was quick and easy to add the dry ingredients as the mixer slowly incorporated them, and we didn’t end up wearing the flour.
Breville’s whisk attachment looks like a big balloon of metal wires, and it worked well whipping lots of air into egg whites. We started with room temperature egg whites and whipped them at the mixer’s highest speed for a set amount of time. Breville managed to fluff up the egg whites to nine times their original volume.
An LED indicator shows you what speed you’ve chosen, and next to each one of 12 speed settings are helpful hints about what tasks each speed can perform. In addition to the excellent design of this machine and the precise placement of the mixer head, attachment and bowl, the orbital movement of the agitator ensures you get consistent batter and dough results. Also, you can load up your mixer and know that if you’ve added too many ingredients, the Breville stops to prevent burning out the motor.
Breville has two features that help keep you as clean as possible: a slow start and a splashguard. The lowest speed setting folds ingredients, so they don’t splash or puff up in your face. The plastic splashguard seemed a bit fragile when we first put the two pieces together and placed it on the bowl, but once it was on it seemed secure, and it was easy to slide ingredients down the plastic chute.
The timer on the LCD screen allows you to choose to count up or down, depending on what you’re doing. If you have a bread dough recipe that requires you to knead for 10 minutes, you can set the timer to count down and walk away – the machine automatically turns off when the kneading is done. The count-up feature helps you time how long mixing takes, which is helpful for future reference.
As with most stand mixers, this Breville includes a standard paddle for mixing and creaming, a dough hook for kneading and mixing heavy batters, and a whisk for whipping cream and egg whites. This mixer also includes a flexible-edge beater that looks exactly like the paddle attachment, but it includes a rubber border that glides along the edges and bottom of the bowl to get every last bit of batter. However, Breville does not offer any additional attachments for its mixer.
Warranties & Support
You’re provided with a warranty that protects you in case of any defective parts, but Breville only promises you that sort of protection for one year. You can find a lot of customer support information on the manufacturer’s website, and you can ask questions by phone or email; you can check for troubleshooting tips and find the user manual there, too. In the user manual, you can find recipes for treats such as lemon shortbread, raspberry cupcakes, Pavlova bites with chocolate raspberry sauce, and basic pizza and pasta dough.
After nearly acing all of the tests we put the Breville Scraper Mixer Pro through, it was an easy choice to award it one of the top spots on our lineup. Between its powerful motor, convenient features and rubber-lined paddle attachment that you get as a bonus along with a spatula, this mixer can do it all, despite the lack of additional attachments that other mixer manufacturers offer.
